Young adults are given the opportunity to combine hands-on job training and professional skill development with continuing musical theater training. Internships for college students are offered in collaboration with higher-education institutions.

As a staff intern, you will be part of the management team of the productions. We look for individuals who are committed to working with children and who are interested in putting excellence in the heart of all activities culminating in performances of high quality.

As an integral member of the staff, you are expected to be professional and punctual at all time, most especially when you are working with the child performers.

As positions are available, they will be listed here along with job descriptions. Please note that CCLYT has high expectations of its interns.The responsibilities of these positions are fluid over the course of the production meaning that job duties will evolve as the production evolves.

Below are sample job descriptions:

Assistant Stage Manager Intern

The Assistant Stage Manager Intern will work under the direction of the Stage Manager and will gain experience in the following aspects of children’s theater:

  • The production of a high quality musicals with the outcome of quality public performance under the leadership of theater professionals.
  • Stage management skills
  • Observation of the rehearsal process of a children’s musical production
  • Learn to work with children in the various capacities needed with the production.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate as the Stage Manager’s assistant, helping set up and strike rehearsal furniture and props, taking down line notes, prompting actors, etc. as per the SM’s instructions
  • Responsible for the smooth and efficient running of the backstage area during performances and rehearsals
  • Supervise and/or participates in all scenery changes and any props and/or costume changes as needed
  • Manage props during rehearsals and performances
  • Assist in supervising a cast of 30 children (grades 4-12) during all rehearsals and performances
  • Responsible for the clean and orderly upkeep of the entire backstage area.
  • Assist with final show strike
  • Other tasks as assigned

Production Assistant Intern 

The Production Assistant Intern will work under the direction of the artistic staff and stage manager will gain experience in the following aspects of children’s theater:

  • The production of a high quality musical with the outcome of quality public performance under the leadership of theater professionals
  • Stage management skills
  • Observation of the rehearsal process of a children’s musical production
  • Learn to work with children in the various capacities needed with the production.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate as assistant for all aspects of the production working with the artistic staff and the Stage Manager
    • Assist the scenic designer and costumer as needed.
    • Assist with organizing the costume dressing rooms and keeping them in order throughout the show run.
    • Responsible for the smooth and efficient running of the backstage area during performances and rehearsals
    • Assist in scenery changes and any props and/or costume changes as needed including set up and strike
    • Manage props during rehearsals and performances
    • Assist in supervising a cast of 30 children (grades 4-12) during all rehearsals and performances
    • Responsible for the clean and orderly upkeep of the entire backstage area
    • Assist with final show strike
      • Assist with compiling materials for program.
      • Assist with the distribution of promotional material.
      • Assist with promotional opportunities as needed.
      • Complete other tasks as assigned

 Musical/Production Assistant

The Musical/Production Assistant Intern will work under the direction of the musical director and the stage manager and will gain experience in the following aspects of children’s theater:

  • The production of a high quality musical with the outcome of quality public performance under the leadership of theater professionals
  • Coaching and vocal technique skills for children’s voices
  • Stage management skills
  • Observation of the rehearsal process of a children’s musical production
  • Learn to work with children in the various capacities needed with the production.

Operate as the assistant to the music director assisting with the learning and coaching of vocal music for the production. Applicants must have training in voice and must have keyboard skills to be able to play melodies and vocal warm-ups with ease.  This position will also serve as a production assistant (responsibilities listed above) when not working with music.

General Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated interest and passion in the field of theater
  • Are at ease working with large groups of children
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and social media
  • A strong desire to learn and grow in your field of interest
  • Reliable transportation
  • Must be available to work on both productions
  • Preference to applicants who have completed their first year of college
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong skills in attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to listen to others and to work well as part of a team
  • The ability to work well effectively as part of a team and alone
  • Stamina, persistence, enthusiasm, motivation, a sense of humor and a proactive manner
